SODIUM BICARBONATE - FG

Sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda (NaHCO3cap N a cap H cap C cap O sub3๐‘๐‘Ž๐ป๐ถ๐‘‚3), is a mild alkali with a wide variety of uses across industries and in the home. It is most famously used as a leavening agent in baking and as a natural cleaner and deodorizer.

  • Leavening agent: When sodium bicarbonate is combined with an acidic ingredient and a liquid, it produces carbon dioxide gas, causing doughs and batters to rise. It is the primary leavening agent in baked goods like quick breads, cakes, and cookies.
  • Meat tenderizer: It can be used to tenderize meat and break down tough fibers, resulting in a more pleasant texture.
  • Flavor balancer: It is used to neutralize acidic flavors in food, such as in tomato-based sauces or some confectionery.
  • Fruit and vegetable wash: A baking soda solution can be used to wash produce, and studies have shown it can effectively remove pesticide residue from the surface of fruits and vegetables.
  • Animal Feed: It is commonly added to livestock feed, particularly for cattle, as a buffering agent.
